The 7 Heavenly Virtues

In parallel to the 7 Deadly Sins, here are the 7 Heavenly Virtues.  Inspired by the prompt from Sahm to compose cinquains based on either of these seven.  Beyond just the obvious correlation of the seven to one another, that is lust/chastity, gluttony/temperance, greed/charity, sloth/diligence, wrath/patience, envy/kindness, and pride/humility, I tried to also make the contents of the cinquains relate to one another.

Chastity

Virgins:
Overrated.
Men don’t dictate my worth,
But nor will I be eaten by
Dragons.

Diligence

Do not
Cease doing good.
Seek a need and fill it.
Evil triumphs when good men do
Nothing.

Temperance

Practice
Self-discipline;
Moderation in all things,
Including moderation.  Just
Let go.

Charity

Your eyes,
Sunken with shame;
Holding that cardboard sign.
I don’t just thrust out a bill, I
See you.

Patience

You can’t
Rush a sunrise,
Force a flower to bloom,
Mend faster than nature allows.
Breathe.  Wait.

Kindness

The best
Kindness is truth
Over flattering lies.
Yes, those pants do make you look fat.
Wear these.

Humility

Discern
Your own value
But sing not your praises.
Allow actions to speak louder
Than words.

The 7 Deadly Sins

The prompt from Sahm to compose cinquains of the 7 deadly sins (or 7 heavenly virtues) got me inspired to do not one, but all 7.  er… 14.  I’ll do the other 7 in the next post, just to keep it uncluttered.

Lust

Sweet lies;
Eternity-
Wrapped empty promises.
Forever only lasts until
The end.

Sloth

Observe,
But never act.
Bring the world to focus,
While through the lens of distant eyes
They die.

Gluttony

Nothing’s
Ever enough.
The more I think I need
To stuff the hole, the emptier
I feel.

Greed

Two bucks:
Useless to me
But to you, a full meal.
Stomach growls, but you can’t have them;
They’re mine.

Wrath

Blinded;
Fear ignites me,
Twisting inside.  Lacking control,
I lash out, not caring where my
Fists land.

Envy

Desire
Thy neighbor’s wife,
That picture-perfect life,
Six figures and a Porsche.  They should
Be mine.

Pride

My words,
Clanging symbols;
Commanding attention,
Only to hear my own voice say
Nothing.
